Rose Star Trellis

... a pattern found in American Patchwork and Quilting autumn 1995. I was starting out quilting, and needed to find a project I could sew by hand.

I figured out I could manage to follow this pattern and sew it by hand. This was before I found out that what 'one did' was to use a running stitch, so the blocks are done using back stitches. When the blocks were to be sewn together, I lost momentum, and the top was assembled by machine.

It is lap sized, with wool batting, but in very rare use, as I know the fabrics in the blocks will bleed terribly when washed ... The last borders to be quilted were done the summer of 2000. This was my first quilt this size. They only got bigger from here, lol.

We are hanging on to the idea of summer, but the days are getting more and more chilly. Take care.

Oh Una, it has a beautiful vintage feel to it. I think I wouldn't even mind the bleeding because it would just add to it's charm. If and when you ever decide to wash it, would you consider using something like "Colour Catcher"? This sheets that you add to the wash to absorb any runaway colour. In the meantime, just enjoy the quilt! Great pictures, Una!

It is a pretty quilt. I have heard that using something called a "dye magnet" with fabrics that will bleed is very helpful. It may be something you cannot get in Norway so let me know and I'll see if I can get one here and I would be happy to send it to you.

I think it is a lovely quilt. I haven't seen that pattern before. It is simple but very effective. "Colour Catcher" has worked for me on a quilt that already had some red that had run onto the homespun background. You need to use a couple of sheets for a quilt that size. But I can understand your reluctance to chance it.

That is a great first quilt! The plaid is a neat idea. It is a very sweet looking quilt. I think the hand quilting adds to it.

I love your quilt. A simple design but eye catching. I have used "Colour Catcher" for a quilt that already had a bit of red dye on the homespun. I thought I had nothing to lose at that stage. It worked brilliantly. I now use it whenever I wash a quilt and I am often surprised at the amount of colour that it "catches".

It's a charming quilt Una, I love how the soft background gives it a delicate and vintage appearance. Your quilting is lovely too!
It's such fun to see peoples earlier quilts.

It is very charming, Una. The colors are beautiful and the plaid gives such a cosy homey feel to it. Would be so comforting to snuggle under it as the colder months are approaching.

Oooo Una that is a beautiful quilt. I love stars!! If you don't have access to the Shout Color Catchers, send me your address and I'll send you a box of them. On my Baltimore, I had some red run and it was on the quilt for 6 years before I finished the quilt. One cycle through the washer with no detergent and 3 catchers and all the red was gone!!

beautiful quilt., maybe its one just to hang over a chair and admire or the wall. I would wash it in with a color catcher sheet or two I have heard good results from using these sheets, they really catch the excess color.

Thank you for sharing you first quilt, Una! It is lovely, and makes me think of christmas time. Quilting is all about learning by doing, isn't it? And part of the fun is to see what we'll learn next. Please keep sharing! What's next?

A lovely simple quilt.

Una, lovely quilt. It gives a feeling of movement and grace. I second (or seventh) the tip to use the color catcher. They work great, and I use them for clothes and rugs, too.
